Meet the
Challenge Part III

The Challenge is coming along nicely. I have completed the design and have almost completed the quilt. Thank goodness it is only 30" by 30". This week, I have included additional photos of the process. Previous photos and posts can be found at Meeting a Challenge and Meeting a Challenge Part II.

However, I have decided not to enter the official contest. I found that shipping the quilt to New Hampshire by the deadline would be too expensive. I really like the design. Therefore, I have decided to write the pattern so that I can share it. In fact, I actually designed two patterns for the contest and chose to make only one. I plan on offering the second design as well. Stay tuned!

Finally, I learned something valuable about quilt contests. If I want to submit a quilt for a contest by mail, I need to ship three weeks before the deadline.

Meeting a
Challenge Part II

I have been working hard on my Keepsake Quilting Challenge!  As I discussed last week the challenge is to create a 30" x 30" quilt that incorporates Flying Geese and uses fabrics from the Challenge Medley. I have now completed all except five of the needed flying geese for my design. I have not decided on the fabrics I will use for these last Flying Geese. I am waiting to see how the rest of it looks. In the photo, I have shown all of the other types of  Flying Geese that I am incorporating.

Starting with the gray/black Flying Goose in the upper left-hand corner and traveling in a clockwise direction, I have made 8 gray/black geese, 20 green/black geese, 4 cream/lilac geese, 2 cream/purple flower geese, 8 purple flower/black geese, and 4 lilac/black geese. Next I need to sew them into quilt. As you may have guessed, I am incorporating the black fabric for the background.

I am enjoying this design challenge. Somehow having constraints on a design helps me to make design decisions. Too many variables seems to slow down the design process for me. Tune in next week for more hints on where this design is going. Until then, Happy Quilting!

Meeting a Challenge

I am working on the Keepsake Quilting Challenge. In this challenge we are to use the Keepsake Challenge Medley of six fat quarters to make a 30" x 30" Flying Geese quilt. We must use at least four of the fabrics in the medley and may add no more than two other fabrics of our choice. It took quite a while to design the quilt, but I have completed that part. Now I am constructing it.

The photo shows the six fat quarters in the Challenge Medley and the entry form.

I will be using the Quilt in a Day method of making Flying Geese. Check back for updates and photos. Better get back to work. Wish me luck!
