Block 6 is Pie by Sherry Shish at Powered by Quilting. I made Cherry Pie because that is my favorite! In this pattern, you piece the background square and then applique the pie onto the background. It is a lot of fun to make!

Sherry's patterns and tutorial can be found at
Powered by Quilting. As a host for Fall into a QAL quilt along, I am presenting my version of her block and my tips for completing it.  All 12 of the blocks in the Fall into a QAL quilt along will be  available free of charge on the designer's  web site until November 13, 2018 at midnight EST. I will be offering links to the released block patterns on my Quilt Alongs page until then. Collect them all!

In addition, I will be showing my version of the block every two weeks here on my blog. Want to keep track of all of the released blocks? Subscribe to the JANDA Bend Quilts Newsletter. You can also join our
Partners in Design Facebook Group to follow the block releases and see the blocks of others.

I selected fall batik fabrics for the wall, table, and the pie itself. Below, you will see my fabric pulls and the pieces that I cut for the background square. the brown rectangles are for the wall, and the squares are for the table cloth. I used a dark and a medium for the striped wall and a light, a medium, and a dark for the checkered tablecloth.

After cutting the fabric, I assembled the rows for the background, I first sewed rows and then sewed the rows together. I found that it is important to pay attention to the pressing instructions. If you press the seams as indicated, all of the seams will lock and lie flat.

Next I made my pie! First I traced the pie pieces onto Heat and Bond Lite, Then I cut the pieces 1/4" from the drawn line and ironed them on the wrong side of the appropriate fabric. Then I cut the pieces out on the line. You need to remove the paper backing before ironing down the pieces. Just as I did last week, I assembled the pie on a non-stick sheet and then ironed the completed pie on the background block. I like to do this so that I can focus on getting the parts of the pie placed as I want them to be. Once I was satisfied with the pie, it was relatively easy to center and iron the pie on the background block. Finally I sewed down the edges using a Blanket Stitch for all except the pie vents. I sewed the pie vent edges down with a straight stitch. Please see photos below.

Fall into a QAL Quilt Along Block 5: Acorn

Completed Split Applique Acorn Block, Designed by Kathleen McCormick

Block 5 is Acorn by Kathleen McCormick at Kathleen McMusing. In fact Kathleen has designed two versions of the Acorn Block! One is a Pieced Acorn and the other is a Split Applique Acorn. You may choose to do either block to post and enter in the drawing! Both of her patterns and tutorials can be found at Kathleen McMusing. As a host, I am presenting my version of one of the blocks and my tips for completing it.  All 12 of the blocks in the Fall into a QAL quilt along will be  available free of charge on the designer's  web site until November 13, 2018 at midnight EST. I will be offering links to the released block patterns on my Quilt Alongs page until then. Collect them all!

I decided to make the split applique version of her block because I have been wanting to try split applique. It was a lot of fun and not as hard as I had imagined. My completed block is shown in the photo above.

I pulled fall batiks for the block. I used four different batiks for the backgrounds, the acorn caps, the acorn main bodies, and the stems. My choices are shown in the photos below.

I traced the applique pieces onto the paper backing of the Heat and Bond Lite. Then I rough cut the applique pieces 1/4" from the drawn line. After ironing the pieces onto the wrong side of the fabrics using the manufacturer's directions, I cut out the applique shapes along the drawn line. I played with the pieces until I determined which pieces to combine for each acorn.

When I was satisfied with the arrangements, I removed the paper backing for the cap and stem of each acorn and ironed each acorn together on a teflon applique sheet. I removed the backing from the body of the acorn before fusing acorns onto the background squares. Vertically finger pressing the background squares in half, helped to align the acorn on the background block. See photos below.

I vertically sliced each acorn in half and swapped halves within each pair of acorns. Then, I sewed the halves together by pairs. I found that pressing the seam open helped the block lie flat. See photos below.

After completing all four split acorns, I sewed the four blocks together. To reduce bulk and make the seams lie flat, I used the Eleanor Burns way! I have discussed this method in a previous post. Please see photos below.

Finally, I sewed down the raw edges using a small blanket stitch on my sewing machine. I sewed down the acorn cap first, then the stem and acorn body. See the completed block below.

Thanks for a fun block Kathleen!

Pieceful Sunday: Home Again Home Again

7/8/2018

Picture of Duart Castle
Courtyard, Duart Castle, Isle of Mull
So happy to be home after our wonderful trip to Scotland! We had a great time traveling by train throughout the Highlands and visiting family in Blakeney, UK, but it was time to return home.

My Internet connection was terrible there. Fortunately, I pre-scheduled my Fall into a QAL quilt along post for June 26 and it posted as planned. However, my Pieceful Sunday posts definitely suffered. The photo is of Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull. It shows the inner courtyard. Much of the castle is currently under renovation.

Duart Castle is the ancestral home of the Maclean Clan. It turns out that I am a descendent of Maclean Clan Chieftains. That made our trip to the castle very special. They even let me sign the official Maclean Clan book which is reserved for clan members!

We met a lot of very nice people, experienced highland history and foods, and saw many interesting sites. We did not see the Loch Ness monster however, even though we searched.
Picture of EPP on the Train
English Paper Piecing on the Train

Of course, I had to bring some hand sewing along with me. The English Paper Piecing (EPP) project seemed perfect. The photo was taken on a train to Edinburgh. Let me just say that sewing on a train is not easy.

Most of the people on our tour were from the UK. I was surprised to find that those who noticed me sewing had not heard of EPP. Maybe it isn't as common as I thought it was in the UK.

While in Edinburgh, Scotland, I found a quilt shop within walking distance of our hotel. So we set out to find Quilt Creations! Here is a photo of the shop. Of course I made a purchase. I only had room for a few fat quarters in my suitcase though.

Most of the fabrics in the store can be found in the US as well. It is a small world. However, I did find a Scottish Thistle fabric that I had not seen before and purchased a fat quarter of it.

We had a wonderful time, but I am glad to be home. I really missed my quilting studio and JANDA Bend. I have sew many quilting projects waiting for me!
