Block 10 is Patchwork Pickles by Sandra Healy at Sandra Healy Designs. Sandra has designed a fun block that has applique fruits and vegetables on a pieced background. Sandra's pattern and tutorial can be found at Sandra Healy Designs. There are only two more blocks to go! As a host for the Fall into a QAL quilt along, I am presenting my version of her block and my tips for completing it. All 12 of the blocks in the Fall into a QAL quilt along will be available free of charge on the designer's web site until November 13, 2018 at midnight EST. I will be offering links to the released block patterns on my Quilt Alongs page until then. Collect them all! In addition, I will be showing my version of the block every two weeks here on my blog. You can also join our Partners in Design Facebook Group to follow the block releases and see the blocks of others. I really like this block because I like to can all kinds of pickles. I have canned pickled cucumbers, green peppers, green beans, and Jalapeno peppers. I have even pickled watermelon rinds! Well I had to try it at least once! I have not done much pickling this year because I have been so busy, but I have high hopes for next year! The first step in making this block is to cut the pieces for the 12 1/2" by 12 1/2" background square which consists of empty jars and background rectangles.. See the photo below. Using the Stitch and Flip method, I then made the glass portion of the empty jars. Then I sewed on the lids of the jars and the background rectangles. See phots below. Now the jars are ready to be filled! Sandra uses raw edge appliques to fill the smaller jar with pears and the larger jar with carrots. I used Heat N' Bond Lite to make and fuse the applique pieces. This time I fused directly "into" the jars. Usually I fuse the applique pieces on a Teflon sheet. However, this time I wanted to make sure that the fruits and vegetables fit into the jars, so I fused directly on the background square. After the applique pieces were fused, I sewed the raw edges down. I used a buttonhole stitch on all of the pieces except for the stems on the pears. They were very small, so I used a straight stitch. See photos below. Next it was time to make the label. I am a beginner when it comes to hand embroidery, so I decided to use the letter embroidery on my sewing machine. I decided to label the contents as well. I did not have any stabilizer, so I decided to try using the Heat N' Bond Lite to stabilize the stitching. That meant that I could then fuse the label directly onto the block as well. I think that it worked rather well. Finally, using a blanket stitch, I stitched down the edges of the label. See photo below. I enjoyed making this block. Thanks, Sandra! I hope that I can fill some jars next year with vegetables from my garden. Where Can I Find the Pattern and the Designer's Tutorials?
