Block 4 of the Fall into a QAL quilt along is Sunflower Block, and it is a beauty! It was designed by Sandy Maxfield. Her tutorial can be found at SandyStar Designs. As a host, I am presenting my version of the block and my tips for completing it. All 12 of the blocks in the Fall into a QAL quilt along will be available for free on the designer's web site until November 13, 2018 at midnight EST. I will be offering links to the released block patterns on my Quilt Alongs page until then. Collect them all! In addition, I will be showing my version of the block every two weeks as well right here on my blog. Want to keep track of all of the released blocks? Subscribe to the JANDA Bend Quilts Newsletter. You can also join our Partners in Design Facebook Group to follow the block releases and see the blocks of others. The first step is to cut all of the pieces. I decided that I wanted to make the petals of the sunflower different colors of gold and orange. The number of brown and green pieces reminded the same. However, I needed 8 squares of gold fabric, 4 squares and 4 rectangles of light orange fabric, 4 rectangles of orange fabric, and 4 rectangles of light gold fabric. See photo below. Next, I constructed the center Snowball Block. I used the flipped corners method to add the triangles to the corners of the brown square. This is similar to how we made flying geese last week. Sandy has some great suggestions on how to make the flipped corners! See photos below. Next I constructed the petals of the sunflower using the flipped corner method. See photo below. The competed petals are shown below. I placed the petals in rows and then sewed the rows as shown below. Then, I arranged the pieces as shown below and sewed them together. Your sunflower is so pretty and your fabric choices for this block (and the others) are great. I often forget about using Batiks. They've changed over the years and now have such interesting designs.

Your block is lovely! I also decided to use multiple fabrics for the petals. Yours sure came out nice!
