I'm so excited to show you my Signal Flag block! It has a secret message! Can you guess what it says? It is block 3 in the QAL by the Sea Quilt Along by Partners in Design.
International Signal Flags are used by ships at sea for communication. There is a flag for each letter of the alphabet and for numbers 0-9 If you are still guessing the secret message of my block, check out this link. This block is constructed by first making the individual flags and then appliquing the flags to the background square. Some of the flags themselves are pieced and some are appliqued.
For more information about the quilt along, including the schedule, giveaways, and sponsors, click on my introductory post. A list of all released blocks with their links can be found at Quilt Alongs.
Where can I find the Pattern for Block 3: Signal Flag?
Click on the button below to download the block.
I used a blue sky fabric for the background and bright scraps of red, blue, yellow, white, and black. Of course, you can use any colors you choose. However, the meaning of the flags is dependent on using the colors as shown. Because the flag pieces are so small and similar, I recommend cutting them as you construct each flag.
As stated above, I recommend cutting the fabric and applique fusible as you go.
Letter A (Make 2.)
Letter Y (Challenge!)
Letter E (Make 2.)
Complete the block.
Enjoying this block pattern? Spoiler alert: I am designing the entire alphabet and numbers 0-9 in a 6" square version. Coming soon! PS: Working in 6" blocks is much easier!
Where Can I Find Other Versions of This Block?
