My Version of the Buttons Block Designed by Laura Pilands

Block 10 of the 2019 Mystery Quilt Along is Buttons by Laura Piland @ Slice of Pi Quilts. The Sew Let's Quilt Along is brought to you by Partners in Design. Buttons is a clever block that you will enjoy making!

You can view and download Lara Piland's pattern @ Slice of Pi Quilts. To learn more about the quilt along please see my Introductory Post or see my Quilt Alongs Page if you missed the previous blocks. Remember that the Partners in Design QAL Patterns are available free of charge until September 24, 2019 at midnight EST.

My Hints and Suggestions for Making the Block
  • I wanted to have high contrast between the background and button fabrics, so I chose a dark purple background and button fabrics that would pop against the purple.
  • The first step is to cut a 13" square. (I trimmed it to 12 1/2" square after completing the block.) Appliqueing on a larger piece of fabric helps to account for any fabric shrinkage during applique and helps make sure that your applique is centered in the final block.
  • Laura has a very clever way of making beautiful circles! I used the templates to cut circles and rings for the buttons. I kept the pins away from the cutting lines. That worked well. Also, I highly recommend following Laura's suggestion to label the circles and rings as you go.
  • See photos.

  • Laura very cleverly used both the right and wrong side of the fabrics.
  • When preparing the circles for applique, it is important to remember that the heat and bond it ironed to the wrong side of the fabric and that the fabric is cut on the outside of the template only to form a circle.
  • When preparing the rings for applique, it is important to remember that the heat and bond it ironed to the right side of the fabric and that the fabric is cut on the outside and the inside of the template to form the ring.
  • See the circles and rings in the photos below.

Small Button Circles and Rings

  • I used my Accuquilt (affiliate link) Cutter to cut the button holes. I ironed the Heat 'n Bond onto the fabric and then cut the circles from the fabric using my circular dies. The circular dies on the #55043 Holiday Medley Die were the perfect size for the small button holes.  I used the 2" circle on my #55012 Circle die, but I had to trim that one down so that it was the correct size. (It is amazing how easy this is. I am making a mental note to trust myself to be able to estimate by eye).
  • I am really hoping to get some more circle dies for Christmas. (I hope you are listening, Santa!)

Button Holes

  • First, I appliqued the large button.  It hangs off the edge of the block, so I only ironed on the part of the circle that was actually on the block.
  • Then, I trimmed the button to match the edge of the block.
  • See photos.

  • For the small buttons, I ironed the button holes and rings to the buttons before adding them to the block. I think that this made it easier to make sure these parts were aligned with the buttons.
  • Then, I ironed the small buttons onto the block.
  • See photos.

  • Using a straight stitch, I sewed down all of the edges of the applique pieces with matching thread.
  • Finally, I trimmed the block to 12 1/2" square.

Grand Prize
To be eligible to win the grand prize, you need to make all 13 blocks from the whole quilt along and turn them into a quilt or other project(s). Quilt tops don’t need to be quilted, but projects do need to be finished. Share a single post that shows all of the blocks in a quilt top or project. It doesn’t matter how many projects or what projects you make, or how many blocks you use in each project as long as you show that you’ve used all 13 blocks in a finished quilt top, project, or projects.

Important Note
To keep the contest portion of the quilt along fair and fun for everyone, only quilters that use all of the designers' blocks [in a quilt top or project(s)] will be eligible for the grand prize. Likewise, our segment prizes will only be open to those that make all of the designers’ blocks for that segment.

Your block looks so good! I really love the purple background. That's so cool that you could get the Accuquilt to cut your circles for you!
