My Version of the Thread Tales Block by Bobbie Bridgeman, Snowy Days Quilting

Block 4 of the 2019 Mystery Quilt Along is Thread Tales by Bobbi Bridgeman @Snowy Days Quilting! The Sew Let's Quilt Along is brought to you by Partners in Design.
To learn more about the quilt along please see my Introductory Post or see my Quilt Alongs Page if you missed the previous blocks.

Bobbie actually made two versions of this beautiful block! I chose to make the version with the spools on a shelf. You can view and download both patterns at Snowy Days Quilting. Remember that the Partners in Design QAL Patterns are available free of charge until September 24, 2019 at midnight EST.

My Hints and Suggestions for Making the Block
  • I wanted a variety of colors for the spools and cones. After all, I use a variety of threads when I sew.
  • I tried to balance the colors of the spools and cones.
  • I had a directional fabric for the background, so I had to pay attention to which direction was up when I cut the rectangles. That was fairly easy.
  • I labeled all of the pieces with sticky notes as I cut them. I found this to be very valuable as I was sewing the block.
  • See photo.

  • The block was constructed by sewing the various sized spools and cones first and then sewing the spools and cones into rows.
  • As I constructed the block, I ironed the seams as indicated. I think this helped keep the block flatter.
  • Bobbie has given the correct measurements for subunits of the block. I found that checking the size of my subunits as I constructed them helped me to make a block at the correct size: 12 1/2" by 12 1/2" unfinished.
  • See photos.

  • After constructing the shelf, I checked for alignment of the shelves, spools, and cones. Some minor adjustments were necessary.
  • See photo below.

  • Then, I sewed the rows together and pressed as indicated.

I enjoyed making this block. I hope you enjoy making it as well!

If you don't remember what I mean by segment, check out the Introductory Post. You will find additional information of interest there as well as a schedule.

How to Enter

Grand Prize
To be eligible to win the grand prize, you need to make all 13 blocks from the whole quilt along and turn them into a quilt or other project(s). Quilt tops don’t need to be quilted, but projects do need to be finished. Share a single post that shows all of the blocks in a quilt top or project. It doesn’t matter how many projects or what projects you make, or how many blocks you use in each project as long as you show that you’ve used all 13 blocks in a finished quilt top, project, or projects.

Important Note
To keep the contest portion of the quilt along fair and fun for everyone, only quilters that use all of the designers' blocks [in a quilt top or project(s)] will be eligible for the grand prize. Likewise, our segment prizes will only be open to those that make all of the designers’ blocks for that segment.
