My Version of Block 5: Sew Let's Quilt Shop by Abbie Danahy @Sparkle On!

I am excited to present Block 5 of the Sew Let's Quilt Along. Block 5 is the Sew Let's Quilt Shop designed by Abbie Danahy @ Sparkle On!
You can download Abbie Danahy pattern @ Sparkle On!  To learn more about the quilt along please see my Introductory Post or see my Quilt Alongs Page if you missed the previous blocks.

I am using fun fabrics from the Salem Quilt Show by Meg Hawkey of Crabapple Hill Studios. All of the members of the Salem Quilt Guild shop at the Salem Quilt Shop! In my version of the block, the shop owner, Brumelda Clapper, is proudly showing her new Block of the Month creation. I'm sure everyone in the guild will want to join in.

My Hints and Suggestions for Making the Block
  • Press seams as indicated and use a consistent 1/4" seam.
  • I included some fussy cutting in my version. There are lots of possibilities! When fussy cutting, it is important to remember the 1/4" seam allowance around your choice of design. I use the fussy cut rulers from Quilt in a Day (not an affiliate link). They come in a variety of sizes and make fussy cutting a breeze.
  • There are many small pieces in the pattern, so I labelled each piece with post-it notes. This really helped me keep organized! See photo below.

  • The awning of the quilt shop is constructed using the sew and flip method to make flying geese patches..
  • See photo below.

Sew the Other Triangle.
  • After constructing the flying geese patched I sewed them together. It is important to keep the 1/4" seam consistent.
  • Then, I added the top of the awning. Be sure to sew through the place where the triangles meet went you sew through this seam. This will give you sharp points at the top of the fringe.
  • See photos below.

  • Next, I sewed the awning to the roof and the roof to the strip of sky.

  • Instead putting pinwheels in the windows, I chose to use fussy cut 2 1/2" square (unfinished size). I wanted the windows to appear to have quilts in them.
  •  I constructed the building as instructed. I used an all-over print for the fabric to make piecing easier to complete.
  • See photos below.

Adding the Building around the Windows
  • I fussy cut the door as well. Brumelda stands inside with her new BOM. When fussy cutting the door piece, remember that the door will be sewn with triangle at the top.
  • After sewing together the middle of the building and completing the sidewalk strip, I aligned the completed block strips, and sewed them together.
  • See photo below.

  • Finally, I wanted to add some embellishments, so I printed the name on the shop and the open sign on fabric. I used the same technique that I used for Block 2: Quilting Mug. However, I did use a purple font to complement the block fabrics instead of using the black font.  It is easy to create text for this purpose using a word processing application.
  • After printing the fabric, I used fabric glue to attach the raw edge applique to the block, and then I sewed with a straight stitch around the edges. I have some surprise embellishments that I will add after quilting as well. Stay tuned.

Great job on this block - love the witchy theme. There hasn't been a quilt shop in the Salem near me in some time...maybe it is time for one again.
