I am so excited about sewing along with the Fat Quarter Shop! (affiliate link) This time I am making my version of their Ladies Aid Block, which is part of their Classic and Vintage Series. I love to piece, so I really enjoy their patterns for vintage blocks that use modern methods of construction. The block may look difficult, but it easy to make an accurate block using their methods. The Ladies' Aid Societies originated in the United States during the Civil War. Their purpose was to support and care for American Civil War soldiers. The success of these groups helped to start a movement that led to women becoming nurses. You can read more about this on the Fat Quarter Shop blog.
The colors for the suffrage movement were purple, white, and gold. In 1919, as states ratified the amendment state by state, the National Women's Party, led by Alice Paul, sewed stars on their flag. Each star represented a state that voted to ratify the amendment. Thirty-six sates needed to ratify the amendment for it to become an amendment to the constitution. Below is a movie of a reproduction of that flag. It is flying in front of my home to celebrate the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment. You can find more about the Women's Suffrage Movement here. The block itself is made from four identical (except for the fabrics used in the piecing) 6 1/2" squares. This results in a 12 1/2" unfinished square. Then the four sub-units are sewn as shown. For the free block pattern and information concerning purchasing a quilt pattern and/or a kit. Go to Ladies Aid Classic and Vintage Series on the Fat Quarter Shop Blog. However, it does help support this blog. Thank you for your support! Happy Quilting!

Welcome to Holiday Gifts to You 2020 Blog Hop brought to you by Partners in Design! Today it is my turn to give you my Jelly Roll Table Topper pattern. Remember that patterns will be free download until January 1, 2021. My Table Topper is made from holiday colors in a Jelly Roll! (I admit that I did add the yellow strips from my stash to brighten the topper.) It is a great way to use left-over strips from Jelly Rolls (2 1/2"x 40" strips) or 2 1/2" strips from your stash! This pattern is fun and easy. Just sew 2 1/2" strips together lengthwise and then re-cut them to make the pattern. I quilted mine on my sewing machine, and simply quilted along the seam lines. It's a great weekend project! To download the pattern, click the button below.
